Scottish and Irish jigs and reels are snappily played by Mary Beth Coffey on fiddle and Michelle Lawrence-Walker on hammered dulcimer, concertina and exquisite flute and whistle. They are both supported and driven by Tim Summers’ powerful guitar and percussion. All three take their turn at vocals, and it is here that they open that darkly humorous vein. Songs like Bedlam Boys, about life in the famous asylum (listen carefully to the words sometime), and The Twa Corbies, wherein 2 crows about to dine on a slain knight discuss their meal, encourage a morbid chuckle, and are performed with primitive, plaintive harmonies. Summers adds the nasal twang found among traditional singers of the British Isles, the sound which evolved into the high lonesome wail of the Appalachians. Peddling Bedlam showcases the band's variety well. Check out Summers’originals:
"Dylan’s Jig" and "Planxty Ginger", as well as their seamless arrrangements
of traditional tunes like "Dinny Delaney", "The Cliffs of Moher", and "Leitrim's
Fancy". Also check them out at one of their lively gigs. The band has over
100 songs in their repertoire and are known to play for over four hours
without a break. And don't be shy, the music is good for listening music,
but great for dancing!
